Radicals enjoy close racing at their opening event of the season at Yas Marina
The Radical Sportcars took to the track this weekend for their opening races of the season at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit. With only three weeks to go before the Formula 1 race in Abu Dhabi the Radical drivers provided some close racing for the fans that attended the event.
In race one, Jordan Grogor took line honours in the Dragon Racing SR8 but it took him to the final lap to overhaul Lucco racings Ludovic Loffreda racing in his SR3 and partnered by Goodyear sponsored driver Romain Lutter. Third in the Supersports class was Oliver Smith and Andy Marshall in the AUH Motorsports car.
The Clubmans class which had a number of new drivers racing, was won by Emirati driver Ahmed Al Hammadi and Mark Jordan in their EMAL Racing car. Eric Zimmerman in his first outing, joined by Qatar driver Salman Al Khatar secured a strong second place followed closely by father and son team John and Matt Illingworth.
Winning driver Jordan Grogor said after the race, “although I was in the SR8 which is a faster car, the extended pit stop that was used by the organisers to balance the performance with the SR3’s, made my race particularly challenging and I was made to work hard for the win. In the second half of the race I had lots of overtaking manoeuvres and it was good to see that whilst the other drivers did not make it easy for me, the racing was extremely fair.”
Race two saw The Loffreda/ Lutter partnership securing the win, but only after some close racing with Russian driver Sergey Shalunov in the Arloid intra House team car. First time out driver Jan Bijsterbosch and co driver Wesley Grogor who had led for the first half of the race
secured third place but nearly lost out following a final lap collision involving the Zimmerman car.
Carl Rolaston, the managing Director of AUH Motorsports which promotes the series said” it was really great to see the mix of new and seasoned Radical drivers out on track today. There was some close wheel to wheel racing but the drivers respected each other and there were few incidents. It augers well for the rest of the season. Yas Marina put on a great event which I am sure was enjoyed by the spectators that attended.”
The next raceday for the Radicals will be at Dubai Autodrome on the 4th, 5th and 6th of December.
